Für das Überleben seiner Familie ist von Ed nichts zu erwarten, in technischen Fragen ist er ein Versager.

Yet a world that’s been broken offers its own kind of optimism; it can be rebuilt, and so too can relationships that before the apocalypse appeared to be unfixable.

I sometimes struggle with books when I don't like the main character, and there were a few moments when I wasn't sure I cared either way if Edgar survived the end of the world or not! I rooted so hard for him even though he probably didn’t deserve to be reunited with the family he took so for granted. Saying that – there is a sequel and frankly, I’m not 100% I can bring myself to read it, should it become available on Kindle here in Canada. That's not a super cheery sentiment (though I did kind of laugh when I read those lines — it's not too much of a stretch these days to root for the end of the world, or at least a huge change to how things are now, right?

Edgar needs to be on his guard, at all times, and struggles with issues of trust, yet for all of his unlikeable character traits, he never once gives up on trying to reach his family. I'd like to think this was a very pessimistic view of how society and survivors would behave and reform, but the thing that scares me most is that it probably isn't. There were very few nice or helpful people here, instead the world now seemed to be populated by buffoon caricatures, weird cult groups and vicious gangs.

Edgar's family are rescued by a small remaining army unit, but he and his wife and children become separated, and so begins Edgar's desperate race to reach his loved ones, who are hundreds of miles away, before they leave on an evacuation ship for another country. Beth thinks she cares more about her family than Ed does but readers of Running Club know differently. About a third of the way in the story drags a little, and I was frustrated that it takes a long time before the title makes any kind of sense at all. Gloria lured in, trapped, robbed, and killed other survivors while pregnant and nursing, yet she could barely tell East from West?

Vom Drückeberger und Trinker wird er durch buchstäblich körperliche Ertüchtigung und Läuterung zum guten Mann und Vater. or maybe I've just read the best of the best and now no one will ever measure up to Station Eleven (read it if you haven't; amazing piece of literature!Even if you're not a runner and could care less about running, there's still plenty here to keep you interested. In one section he and his running club come across a rather strange set up with a group of people who have taken over an area of a city.
