This is an excellent battleboard for use at home, but unless you pre-cut it so you can fold it for easier transport, it doesn't have easy mobility. As for the curling, I either put stuff on the corners or simply lay it facedown for an hour before the game and most of the curling disappears. Likewise, a 2:1 or 1:1 light square grid fencing, or taught chain-link (which when taut and not sagging, is usually a square grid with odd corners) can make a good quick grid.

I found a long cardboard tube somewhere once, i think from wrapping paper, about as wide as a paper towel roll. This is very important to the question as there are thousands of variants with different materials that have different interactions with the ChesseX Battlemap. It depends on the brand of mat, but for Chessex the dry erase marker will be absorbed into the fabric fairly quickly.

I was worried about a rolled up tube of vinyl getting damaged in the mail, but my worries where for not. The big issue is the labor involved in sending the files to a printer then mounting and cutting them. Yeah, I also read somewhere else that the vinyl in the older Battlemats holds its form better than in the newer ones.

You are never required to use this blog's links to purchase anything, but your support is appreciated. My understanding is that the imperfections are all of this kind of magnitude, but I can’t say that for certain. I was thinking of either drawing them with permanent marker, or, if the material is plastic, etching the battlemats with a hot knife, perhaps only with a small cross at the corners of the squares like you see in the official printed mats of DnD. The best method I have found to do this quickly, cheaply, and easily while still ending up with a durable and resilient mat is outlined in this YouTube video.Dip some alcohol, rub a little, dip some acetone, rub a little more, then dip some alcohol and rub some more. And now I've discovered that the whole battlemat curves up off the table in a neat-o arch style reminiscent of the Roman Aqueducts.
