This sixth edition remains true to the original concept: it offers a range of good basic blocks, an introduction to the basic principles of pattern cutting and examples of their application into garments. It shows how the basic block is adapted to make the whole range of garments, demonstrating how clothes are put together. I think the fact that almost every pattern cutter that I know has a copy of this book speaks for itself! We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. It is a little technical - but if you start right at the beginning and take your time - it makes you really understand the craft of pattern drafting and using a basic block to tailor to individual sizes and allow for 'problem areas' - e.

Usually, a toile is made from calico or scrap fabric with a similar drape to it (always use a stretch fabric for a stretch pattern, not calico). I draw lines down my side and take measurements seperately for back and front and use those to draft the front and back seperately as opposed to using the full bust, waist and hip measurements as in the book. It's quite strong so it won't break (it's been around the world with me and it hasn't broken, I think that's quite impressive) and it's super easy to do seam allowances with the extra lines on it. It includes instructions for using stretch and jersey fabrics as well as the more traditional woven fabrics. There's also a Menswear edition (royal blue cover) and Children's wear and Babywear edition (bright green cover) . The book then progresses through any type of outfit you could imagine right through to the final details you may want to use in your designs.

Neuware - Metric Pattern Cutting for Women's Wear provides a straightforward introduction to the principles of form pattern cutting for garments to fit the body shape, and flat pattern cutting for casual garments and jersey wear.I bought this new edition for my daughter and will be borrowing it back as it has some very useful additional chapters to my original. For someone who has used commercial patterns and has an understanding of how garments are made from a pattern, this is a great book. I personally use the 5th edition of this book (purple cover) but if you want to be all up to date there is now a 6th edition (Oliver green cover) , I'm not sure there's much difference though. This book by Winifred Aldrich is a great introduction to the principles of form pattern cutting for garments to fit the body shape and flat pattern cutting for casual garments and jersey wear. Pattern Cutting Ruler - I use the Pattern Master ruler because I find the size covers most outfits I make.

I'm all for creating and designing your own sewing patterns so that you can get more from your sewing projects and this is why I am trying to make pattern cutting as accessible as possible to everyone. Pattern cutting paper - I tend just to use a roll of recycled brown paper at the moment by RUSPEPA which you can find here . Franchement, si vous connaissez comment un patron est construit, si vous avez quelques bases, ce livre est parfait.BS31) This item is being sold under the Retail Gift Aid scheme which enables us to increase the value of the donations by 25%. The best bit is that Winifred explains a bit about the jacket seam allowances and lining construction (FYI, different to dress!

However, the great expansion of casual wear, cut in jersey or stretch fabrics, has led to the growth of 'flat cutting' with no darting to create the shape and this edition devotes a whole section to this type of cutting. They are PDF printables, therefore can download them, print them at home, stick them together and start creating straight away. I do think another book which details how to sew clothes together and various techniques would be a good companion. The reason that Metric Pattern Cutting is so great is that it covers BOTH of these key skills and waaay more! However, the instructions are structured in a way that can be confusing if you’re new to pattern cutting.A good book for learning how to make your own patterns, design your own clothes, just the way you like. Winifred Aldrich shows you how to create the correct size, design, and construction for your project. The joining the dots process of recreating these blocks, allows one to understand the building blocks (no pun intended) of a pattern. Her other books include: Metric Pattern Cutting for Menswear and Metric Pattern Cutting for Children′s Wear and Babywear.
