Description

It is axiomatic that one who is a Guru in this supreme sense of having realized his identity with the Absolute does not say so, inasmuch as there is no ego left to affirm the identity. Ramana Maharshi was one of the most significant spiritual teachers to emerge from India during the first half of the century, and remains widely admired. that all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.

As this will be the result, it is thought of as the purpose of the prayer for the whole body of believers. But I was overtaken by akrama mukti [sudden liberation] before I passed through any of the above-mentioned stages. Whether he moves about, or talks, or acts, it is all the one reality in which he acts or moves or talks. Indeed Self Enquiry is an ancient Practice embraced by the major religions and one which has inspired many in all walks of life. However there are two texts which stand out amongst all this verbiage: The Bhagavad Gita and this book, a collection of the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi who reawakened interest in this simple yet profound Practice in the early part of the 20th century. The chapter on yoga is about the eight limbs of yoga described by Patanjali, and their relevance to the practice of Jnana yogi.

Ramana puts everything in clear and simple words, and Hindu terms and Sanskrit words are also explained. Know then that true knowledge does not create a new being for you, it only removes your ignorant ignorance. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Even in a highly organized community, as the separate individuals have more and more personal consciousness of special function, they become the more dependent on the whole, and in one sense lost in the unity to which they belong.

I'm an ex-marketing executive turned self-education entrepreneur after an existential crisis in 2015. I’d recommend this book for anyone who wants to know more about jnana yoga or to get a different take on the philosophy of yoga in general. People have mentioned that this book uses Hindu or ancient Indian words or phrases but all are explained in the glossary at the back and it doesn't distract from the reading, takes a bit of getting used to admitedly but ensures a long English explanation isn't used everytime that would break up the flow of the book. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. It is like a man who is in the shade, voluntarily leaving the shade, going into the sun, feeling the severity of the heat there, making great efforts to get back into the shade and then rejoicing, ‘How sweet is the shade! That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. In this book, David Godman try to explain what Sri Ramana's means of The Self, Sat-chit-ananda, God, The Heart, Reality, etc. Only if one knows the truth of love, which is the real nature of Self, will the strong entangled knot of life be untied.

While superpowers sound cool, Sri Ramana (as well as Patanjali) warned against he pursuit of these abilities as they become distractions from obtaining self-realization. From the particle au; the reflexive pronoun self, used of the third person, and of the other persons. Vichāra is reflection and contemplation upon the meaning of Vedantic truths, and leads the individual to true knowledge, it leads to Brahman, the Universal Self.

This outstanding introduction to Sri Ramana Maharshi has both a comprehensive clarity and a depth as well as a genuine authenticity in a busy field of other books on Advaita and the Self. Out of all the literature translated and presented to express the depth of Ramana Maharshi's teaching I feel David Godman has done the best job in my opinion.
